The best dental problem is the one that never happens. Preventive care is the smartest investment you will ever make in your child’s health.
Tooth decay is the most prevalent chronic disease among children in the United States — but it is almost entirely preventable. Preventive dentistry is the set of strategies, treatments, and habits that stop cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems before they start. It is the reason we emphasize regular checkups from an early age, and it is central to everything we do at Irving Family Dentistry.
Prevention is not glamorous. It does not make headlines. But a child who grows up with healthy teeth because of smart preventive care grows up with better health, better confidence, and far fewer painful dental experiences. That matters deeply to us.
Our Preventive Services
Regular Dental Exams (Every 6 Months)
The foundation of all preventive care. At every exam, we check for early signs of decay, evaluate gum health, assess jaw and bite development in children, review X-rays, and answer any questions you have. Catching problems at the earliest stage — when they are small, easy to treat, and inexpensive to address — is the primary goal of every routine appointment.
Professional Cleanings (Prophylaxis)
Brushing and flossing at home is essential, but even the most diligent brusher leaves behind plaque that eventually hardens into tartar. Professional cleanings remove this buildup from all surfaces of the teeth, including areas a toothbrush simply cannot reach. Regular cleanings keep gums healthy, prevent decay, and leave your child’s mouth feeling great.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride is nature’s cavity fighter. It strengthens tooth enamel by remineralizing areas weakened by acid-producing bacteria, and it makes teeth more resistant to future acid attacks. We apply a professional-strength fluoride treatment at each cleaning appointment. It is quick, safe, and one of the most effective tools we have for preventing cavities in children.
Fluoride treatments are especially important for children who are at higher risk for cavities, including those who consume a lot of sugary foods or drinks, have had cavities before, or have difficulty maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine at home. Most Medicaid and CHIP plans cover fluoride treatments for children.
Dental Sealants
Look closely at the back teeth in your child’s mouth. See those deep grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces? Those are the most common sites for cavities in children — and they are nearly impossible to fully clean with a toothbrush. Dental sealants solve this problem by coating those surfaces with a thin, protective resin that seals food and bacteria out.
Sealants are applied in minutes, are completely painless, require no drilling or needles, and can last for several years. Studies show that sealants reduce the risk of cavities in back teeth by up to 80%. We typically recommend sealants as soon as a child’s first permanent molars come in (around age 6) and again when the second molars erupt (around age 12).
Oral Hygiene Education
We believe that education is one of the most powerful preventive tools we have. At every appointment, we take time to teach children how to brush effectively (technique matters more than force), how and when to floss, which foods and drinks are most likely to cause cavities, and why keeping their baby teeth healthy matters even though they will eventually fall out.
We also spend time with parents. We share age-appropriate brushing tips, guidance on fluoride toothpaste amounts, and when to wean from bottles and pacifiers. You are your child’s first and most important dental teacher — and we want to make sure you feel fully equipped.
Dietary Guidance
Diet has a huge impact on dental health. Frequent exposure to sugar — especially through sippy cups, juice, sports drinks, and snacks — feeds the bacteria that cause cavities. We provide practical, non-judgmental nutritional guidance that helps families make small, manageable changes that significantly reduce cavity risk. We know that telling a family to cut out all sugar is not realistic. We focus on practical strategies that actually fit into everyday life.
Sports Mouthguards
Dental injuries are among the most common sports injuries in children. A custom-fitted sports mouthguard from our office provides far better protection than any over-the-counter option. It is comfortable enough that your child will actually wear it, and durable enough to protect those growing permanent teeth through practices and games. We recommend mouthguards for any child participating in contact or collision sports.
Thumb-Sucking & Pacifier Counseling
Thumb-sucking and pacifier use are completely normal for babies and young toddlers. However, when these habits continue past the age of three or four, they can begin to affect the development of the teeth and jaw. We provide gentle, judgment-free guidance for parents on how to help children transition away from these habits in a way that is kind, gradual, and effective.
Prevention Is the Most Affordable Dental Care There Is
A dental cleaning and exam costs a fraction of what a filling costs. A filling costs a fraction of a crown. A crown costs a fraction of an extraction and replacement. Investing in preventive care today is the single best way to avoid larger, more costly dental problems in the future. And with Medicaid and CHIP, many preventive services are covered at no cost to your family.
